There are not many suspension bridges around the world; however, the ones present are extremely popular due to their design and the style of construction. One of America’s significant landmarks in terms of suspension bridges is the Golden Gate. However, it is the Brooklyn Bridge that was the first gigantic suspension bridge built in America.
The Brooklyn Bridge has been built above the East River and was originally meant to connect the large town of Manhattan to nearby built outskirts of Brooklyn. During the earlier times, this bridge was not known as the Brooklyn Bridge. In 1867, someone sent a letter to the chief editor of the newspaper Brooklyn Daily Eagle and that was the first time that the bridge was referred to as Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge was under construction at that time and was finally completed in the year 1883. Back then, it was known to be the first bridge that had steel wire suspensions. In a study in 1903, it was found out that the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest bridge that had ever been built on suspensions. However, it was only in the year 1964 that the authorities included this bridge in the records of National Historic Landmarks.
Brooklyn Bridge has been the witness of changes in transportation that have taken place for a period greater than a century. The bridge was constantly updated to keep it in line with the nature and volume of traffic that commuted over it every day. When the Brooklyn Bridge was originally built, people used to travel on horse-back or carriages that were drawn by horses. Times changes and trolleys and trains were invented that completely replaced the horses with motor engines. As of now, the Brooklyn Bridge now consists of six lanes that are completely dedicated to motor traffic. A walkway has been sidelined for the sole use of pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge also some restrictions when it comes to the height and weight of motor vehicles.
As is common with all the places that are the regular pathways of thousands of people every day, the Brooklyn Bridge has also been witnessed some unfortunate incidents from the time it was under constructions. Suicide jumper’s, shooting incidents and accidents, the bridge has seen them all. However, the Brooklyn Bridge has been considered as one of the main icons of Brooklyn and the New York City.
